MANILA — The second suspect in the robbery-killing of an architecture student who was stabbed 18 times, died from suffocation inside the cramped detention cell of the Taguig City police headquarters Sunday night, officials said.

Reynold “Sakura” Clave, resident of Barangay South Signal, died around 10:45 p.m. from a medical complexity, Senior Supt. Tomas Apolinario, director of Southern Police District, said on Sunday.

“He died from suffocation,” Senior Insp. Ruther Saquilayan, investigation chief of Taguig police, told the Philippine Daily Inquirer.

Saquilayan said 225 detainees were inside in the 60-square-meter facility. The jail was also divided into two sectors for male and female. About 85 percent of detainees were cramped in the male sector where Clave was held.

A fellow detainee called the attention of a jail officer about Clave’s condition and Clave was brought to the Taguig Pateros District Hospital where he was declared dead on arrival, Saquilayan said.

Clave underwent inquest for murder last week for the death of Nick Russel Oniot, 18, an architecture student of Adamson University.

Oniot was walking on Martinez Street, Barangay Central Signal, around 10:30 p.m. of Oct. 14 when he was mugged.

The suspect who tried to grab Oniot’s bag was identified as Clave based on the barangay CCTV footage. He then tagged Marvin Bernardo as his cohort who stabbed Oniot.

Bernardo, who had a previous murder case and recently got out of prison, was shot dead in police custody on Oct. 15 after he allegedly grabbed the gun of his police escort.  SFM
