Mt. Bulusan in Sorsogon province spewed ash on Monday morning, according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs).
In an advisory, Phivolcs said Bulusan generated a minor phreatic eruption at 7:36 a.m. which lasted for 24 minutes, after a recorded 24 volcanic earthquakes in the past 24 hours.
Phivolcs said the ash column reached a height of 1,000 meters and originated from the southeast vent.
“Sulfur dioxide (SO2) emission was measured at an average of 79 tonnes/day on October 12, 2016. Precise leveling data obtained on August 16-25, 2016 indicated slight inflationary changes of the edifice relative to May 2016. Moreover, ground deformation data from continuous GPS measurements as of 30 September 2016 showed inflationary trends since July 2016,” Phivolcs added.
Alert level 1 remained in effect over the volcano, meaning that “hydrothermal processes are underway beneath the volcano that may lead to more steam-driven eruptions.”
Phivolcs reminded the public and local government units that entry to the 4-kilometer radius permanent danger zone was strictly prohibited “due to the possibility of sudden and hazardous steam-driven or phreatic eruptions.” RAM
