Remaining suspect in rob-rape-slay case nabbed
The hunt for the remaining suspect in the rape-slay of a 26-year-old University of the Philippines hostel marketing officer ended with the man’s arrest for illegal possession of a deadly weapon and drugs in Quezon City. Erro Allid, alias Dandan, was picked up by the police on Saturday, more than two weeks after he was positively identified by a witness as one of the two men who robbed, raped and killed Jee Anne de Guzman on October 4 in Camarin, Caloocan City. Based on the witness’ account, Allid and 18-year-old Erik Macaraan dragged De Guzman to a dimly lit grassy area where she was divested of her valuables, raped and then killed. Macaraan, the alleged mastermind, was arrested by policemen a week after in his relative’s house near the crime scene. Case investigator Senior Police Officer 1 Noli Albis told the Inquirer that policemen manning a checkpoint in Quezon City found a knife and drugs in Allid’s possession, prompting them to hold him in custody. “The policemen in Quezon City coordinated with us and we gave confirmation,” Albis said.—Kristine Felisse Mangunay
Manila considers LED lights for streets
The Manila City government is studying the possibility of using new street lights that are expected to reduce the city’s electricity bills by at least 80 percent. Mayor Alfredo Lim said in a statement that the city would experiment with LED [light-emitting diode] lights in coordination with Seoul Semi Conductor Inc. from Korea.—Jaymee T. Gamil
