SAN PEDRO CITY, Laguna — A former mayor of Torrijos town in Marinduque province died after his motorcycle was hit by a passenger bus on Thursday, police said.

Gil Briones, 72, died in the hospital at 8 a.m., more than an hour after the accident, said Insp. Mikhail Valeroso, Torrijos police chief.

Valeroso, in a phone interview, said Briones visited his wife’s grave at the town cemetery in Barangay (village) Poblacion and was driving his motorcycle when he was hit by a Jac Liner bus at 6:40 a.m.

Due to the impact, Briones was thrown off his motorcycle and hit the road gutter. The bus driver, Jeville Siplao, surrendered to the police.

Briones served as Torrijos mayor from 2007. After completing three terms, he ran and won as town councilor in this year’s elections.  SFM/rga
