TODAY, Sept. 12, is the 103rd birth anniversary of National Artist for Cinema Gerardo “Gerry” De Leon. A medicine graduate, De Leon made his directorial debut with “Ama’t Anak” and his biggest prewar hit was “Ang Maestra.” His other known films include “Daigdig ng mga Api,” “Noli Me Tangere” and “El Filibusterismo.” He died on July 25, 1981 and was named National Artist the following year.
