Drug suspect escapes Digos City jail
DIGOS CITY — A drug suspect escaped from his detention cell at the Provincial Rehabilitation Center (PRC) in Barangay Matti here around 6:30 a.m., Sunday.
Acting provincial warden Virgilio Doble said Moktar Jay Uan, 27, married and a resident of Barangay Malasila, Makilala, North Cotabato, escaped by sawing off two of the grills of the toilet exhaust fan in his cell.
Uan faces charges for violation of the Comprehensive Anti-Illegal Drugs Act following his arrest during a buy-bust operation in Magsaysay, Davao del Sur last year.
Supt. Demetrius Taypin, the city police chief, said investigation showed that after getting out of his cell, Uan climb off the PRC’s perimeter fence and vanished.
“The guard on duty of post number 3 tried to shoot the said prisoner but unfortunately his issued firearm has malfunctioned,” Taypin said.
Doble said prison guard Emmanuel Lañas and other personnel on duty were now being investigated even as a manhunt for Uan has been launched. JE/rga
