Despite strict security at Bilibid, raid yields drugs, weapons

Despite the strict security imposed inside the New Bilibid Prison, inmates still found means to peddle illegal drugs and smuggle prohibited items.

Authorities discovered this after the Northern Police District conducted a buy-bust operation inside the medium security compound of the national penitentiary where they managed to buy illegal drugs from five inmates.

Upon confirmation, members of the Philippine National Police-National Capital Region Police Office locked down the prison at 4:10 p.m. on Thursday and conducted an “Oplan Galugad.”

Authorities seized an undetermined quantity of suspected methamphetamine hydrochloride or “shabu,” different kinds of mobile phones and chargers, several bladed weapons and sharp objects, several television sets, money in different denominations, various drug paraphernalia, wrist watches, electric fans, rice cookers, cigarettes and lighters and a karaoke machine.

The police operation took about three hours.

The five inmates were moved to the maximum security compound while the confiscated items were turned over to the NPD./rga
