DIGOS CITY, Philippines—A policeman assigned with the Padada town police was arrested on Thursday at the Davao del Sur provincial hospital, where he was being treated for a gunshot wound, on suspicion of involvement in a robbery  that took place in a village here earlier in the day.

Senior Supt. Samuel Gadingan, the Davao del Sur police chief, said they learned of the condition of Police Officer 2 Ronald Sultan after the policeman’s father reported to the Padada police that his son had accidentally shot himself.

Padada and city policemen went on to check on Sultan while another team of policemen went to his house, Gadingan said.

In the policeman’s house, investigators found Sultan’s bloody sweatshirt and a motorcycle resembling that of the suspect who had eluded a police checkpoint in Hagonoy town—which was put up after a businesswoman reported that she was robbed of P15,000 in Barangay (village) Dawis here by a motorcycle-riding suspect.

Gadingan said when the suspect evaded the police checkpoint in Hagonoy, the town between this city and Padada, he engaged them in a brief shootout.

“He shot the chasing policemen, which prompted them to fire back and hit him,” Gadingan said.

He said more pieces of evidence were found in Sultan’s house in Padada, which would support suspicions that he was the motorcycle-riding robber. RAM/rga
