Today, Aug. 16, is the 105th death anniversary of Teodora Alonzo, mother of national hero Jose Rizal. Born on Nov. 9, 1827, Alonzo came from a distinguished family from Laguna province and was educated at Colegio de Sta. Rosa in Manila. She also suffered persecution from the Spanish government and was imprisoned twice. When her son, Jose, was sentenced to death, she appealed to the governor-general to no avail. She died in 1911 in their house in Manila. Marielle Medina, Inquirer Research
