A former Samar mayor and a treasurer in San Sebastian were charged with malversation and graft for failing to remit P1.273 million tax collections to the Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR).
In a statement on Tuesday, the Office of the Ombudsman said it would file charges for malversation and violation of Section 3(e) of the Anti-Graft and Corrupt Practices Act against former San Sebastian mayor Arnold Abalos and treasurer Virginia Uy.
They were charged with failing to remit to the Bureau of Internal Revenue the municipal government’s tax collections worth P1,272,831,63 from 2008 to 2009.
The Ombudsman said the failure of the local officials, both accountable for the funds, to remit the tax collections gave the presumption that they misappropriated the amount meant to be remitted to the BIR. CDG/rga
