Signal No. 1 up over Catanduanes; rains expected in Visayas

Signal No. 1 was hoisted over Catanduanes, Northern and Eastern Visayas on Friday afternoon as Tropical Depression “Carina” headed north northwest toward eastern Luzon.

These provinces, the rest of Visayas, and the provinces of Albay, Sorsogon and Masbate were warned of moderate to heavy rains which may trigger flashfloods and landslides.

Carina was last observed 135 kilometers east northeast of Borongan City, Eastern Samar, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration said.

The tropical depression packed maximum sustained winds of of 45 kilometers per hour near the center. It moved north northwest at 11 kph.

Moderate to heavy rains are forecast within Carina’s 300 kilometer diameter./rga
