SAN PEDRO CITY, Laguna — A 68-year-old man hacked and killed his wife and wounded his grandson before he was shot dead by policemen in Calamba City in Laguna province on Sunday, police said.
Supt. Fernando Ortega, Calamba police chief, said the suspect, Patricio Gonzales Sr., woke up at 4:30 a.m. and suddenly confronted his wife, Luisa, 68, about some marital issues.
At the height of their discussion, Gonzales drew out a sickle and began hacking his wife and their 13-year-old grandson, Julius.
The couple’s son, Patricio Gonzales Jr., 32, who was awakened by the commotion witnessed the gruesome attack and sought help from the police.
“The police asked him (Patricio Sr.) to surrender but he tried to attack one of our officers,” Ortega said in a telephone interview.
Patricio Sr., who was hit in the chest, died while being taken to a hospital.
Luisa died in a hospital about an hour following the attack. Their grandson survived. SFM
