Duterte admin to scrutinize mining contracts

DAVAO CITY – The incoming Duterte administration will review mining contracts and permits as soon as it assumes office.

“I am sure almost as soon as possible after the inauguration. With the coming of Ms. (Gina) Lopez, it is going to be reviewed as soon as possible,” incoming presidential spokesman Ernesto Abella told reporters in a press briefing here on Thursday.

Abella was referring to the review of existing mining contracts and permits in the Philippines.

With the appointment of Gina Lopez, a known anti-mining advocate, Abella maintained that Duterte is not adopting an anti-mining policy. He said the incoming President only wants to promote responsible mining.

“The president is not anti-mining. He actually supports each and every venture that contributes to the health of the Philippine economy,” he said.

During a business forum here on Wednesday, Duterte said he would not ban mining but companies should “do it right.”

“Making money out of the precious metals of the Earth that belong to the people, you have to do it right. If you can’t do it right, get out,” he said.

Asked about Duterte’s pro-responsible mining stance and Lopez’ anti-mining advocacy, Abella said: “The fact that she’s accepted [the offer to be the Secretary of the environment department] means she’s willing to adjust her position. I’m sure.”
