TODAY is the 84th birth anniversary of National Artist for Visual Arts Federico Aguilar Alcuaz. Born in Manila in 1932, Alcuaz was a prominent painter and a lawyer. Among his famous works are “Tres Marias,” a series of women in Filipiniana attire done in the 1970s. Alcuaz was awarded the Republic Cultural Heritage Award in 1965, Distinguished Service Award in 1985, Centennial Award for Arts and Culture in 1995 and Philippine Presidential Medal of Merit in 2007. He was named National Artist in 2009 but the title was conferred in 2016. Alcuaz died on Feb. 2, 2011. Marielle Medina, Inquirer Research
