MANILA, Philippines –Residents in Metro Manila can rest easy as water in the region is safe for drinking and was proven negative for Escherichia coli (E.Coli) bacteria, the Department of Health (DOH) said Wednesday.

According to DOH Center for Health Development Metro Manila Regional Director Eduardo Janairo, they conducted 1,228 water sampling and all tests came back negative for E.Coli.

Janairo said that consumers subscribed to Maynilad and Manila Water have nothing to worry about.

However, Janairo said that the E.Coli bacteria can also be found in improperly cooked meats and vegetables. He also warned the public to observe proper hygiene to prevent the spread of disease causing bacteria.

The health department has been conducting water samplings in areas affected by floods brought about by the recent storms that hit the country to ensure that the water supply was not contaminated by disease-causing bacteria.
