BAGUIO CITY– The Abra police are investigating reports that a group affiliated with one of the province’s winners during the May 9 polls had attempted to take over the capitol, 45 days ahead of the official inauguration of newly elected leaders.
Abra Gov. Eustaquio Bersamin on Friday spoke of the attempt allegedly made on May 12 by people working for Governor-elect Joy Valera-Bernos.
“I asked the police and the military to secure the provincial Capitol. One of the men who attempted the takeover drove away with a government vehicle. They have to respect the fact that I remain governor until June 30,” he said in a telephone interview. Bernos is the incumbent congresswoman. The Inquirer is still attempting to reach her at press time.
Marlo Iringan, Cordillera director of the Department of The Interior and Local Governments, said he is verifying the reported takeover attempt. CDG/rga
