For the first time since the election quick count began, Liberal Party vice presidential candidate Leni Robredo has inched past Senator Bongbong Marcos to claim the country’s second-highest position.
As of at 3:20 a.m. on May 10, 2016, Robredo leads the vice presidential race by a mere 575 votes. The two, however, are still tied percentage-wise at 34.86 percent.

Over 40 million votes have been counted since the polls closed at 5 p.m. on May 9. The Commission on Elections earlier reported that 81 percent of the country’s 55 million registered voters have cast their ballots.

Early in the count, the son of the late dictator Ferdinand Marcos and incumbent Ilocos Norte governor led the vice presidential race by as much as 5.1 percent over Robredo, then his closest rival.

Robredo, however, never lost hope that she would catch up to Marcos. At 11:44 p.m. on May 9, the Camarines Sur representative personally tweeted a message of hope to her supporters with the hashtag #LabanLeni.
“Palapit na tayo. Ayon sa projections, mananalo tayo. Walang bibitiw. Sa huli, ang tama ang mananaig. Dasal pa tayo,” her tweet read at 11:44 p.m. (We are near. According to our projections, we will win. Hold on. In the end, what is right will prevail. Let us pray.)
When she posted the tweet, Marcos was holding on to only a 0.25-percent lead, or 88,821 votes.
