The camp of Liberal Party candidate Mar Roxas has admitted that the partial tally results are discouraging as his rival Rodrigo Duterte continues to lead in the Commission on Elections’ (Comelec) unofficial vote count.
But administration coalition spokesperson and Akbayan Rep. Barry Gutierrez said they were still holding on to the votes from Roxas and running mate Leni Robredo’s bailiwicks—Panay Island and Bicol provinces.
“Hindi pa naman tapos ang boxing eh. We even haven’t reached fifty percent of the counts,” Gutierrez said in a press briefing at the LP headquarters in Cuba, Quezon City, on Monday night.
“There’s still time to make up from the ground. That’s for the presidential race,” he said.
As for the vice presidential race, Gutierrez said LP was upbeat as Robredo continued to close in on Sen. Bongbong Marcos.
“We are confident that when the votes from our bailiwicks come in, when the votes from areas where our local leaders are get counted, we will take the lead and hold on to it till the end,” he said.
As of 7 p.m., Duterte is leading the presidential race with 8.5 million votes. Trailing him is Sen. Grace Poe with 4.8 million votes.
Roxas is closing in on Poe with 4.6 million votes.
Meanwhile, in the vice presidential race, Marcos is leading with 7.8 million votes.
Robredo is not far behind with 7.1 million votes.
