CITY OF CAUAYAN, Philippines—At least six people died and 11 others were hurt on Monday morning when their van plunged into a 50-meter ravine and was swept by the strong current of a nearby river at Barangay (village) Ismael in Maddela, Quirino, police said.
Chief Insp. Avelino Cuntapay, Quirino provincial police community relations chief, said the victims were on their way to a resort in Barangay Dinadiawan in Baler, Aurora, when they met with the accident around 2:30 a.m.
Cuntapay said the names of the fatalities—four of them men and two women—were not immediately available. Their bodies were taken to a funeral parlor in Maddela while the injured were taken to the Quirino Province Medical Center.
Investigators said the driver of the van lost control of the steering wheel when it suffered a mechanical trouble and fell into the ravine. RAM
