Marcos woos Iglesia vote

SENATOR Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. said on Wednesday that he sought the support of the influential religious sect Iglesia Ni Cristo to help him clinch the vice presidency.

Marcos said that he presented his programs should he be elected to office to INC’s executive minister Eduardo V. Manalo on Tuesday.

He did not reveal if he was with his running mate Senator Miriam Defensor Santiago when he made the visit to the religious sect’s top minister.

The son of the late dictator said that he is hoping to get the support of the INC, which is practicing “bloc voting.”

“Umaasa ako na suportahan ng ating kapatiran ang ating kandidatura,” Marcos told members of the digital media and bloggers in an event.

Aside from Marcos, other vice presidential candidates who sought the backing of the INC include administration candidate Ma. Leonor “Leni” Robredo and independent candidate Senator Francis “Chiz” Escudero.

Marcos is currently the front-runner in opinion polls.

If Bongbong gets the INC nod, it will not be the first time that the Church will support a Marcos in the national level. It has previously backed the late dictator Ferdinand E. Marcos during the 1986 snap elections but still lost to late President Corazon Aquino.
