MANILA — A 13-year-old boy and his 78-year-old grandfather died after a rifle grenade that the latter was keeping, exploded inside their 2-story home in Grace Park, Caloocan City, Monday night, the police said.
Investigators ruled the deaths an accident.
PO2 Cesar Garcia, a Caloocan police investigator, said Geronimo Dacillo and his grandson Rafael Vincent Velasquez died on the spot inside the house along 8th Avenue, Barangay 56, due to serious injuries.
The boy’s right arm was almost severed in the blast, Garcia said.
Both victims were in Dacillo’s room on the first floor where he was keeping a grenade in a bag, which was placed under a TV set, according to the initial investigation.
Before the explosion, the boy picked up the bag and tried to check what was inside by pounding it repeatedly, Garcia told the Philippine Daily Inquirer.
There were three other people in the house when the grenade exploded around 8:30 p.m. Responding members of the Caloocan Police Community Precinct 2 arrived about 10 minutes later.
Garcia said an investigation was going on as of posting time to find out how Dacillo got hold of the grenade. SFM/VC/AC
