Authorities conducted yet another surprise raid on the maximum security compound of the New Bilibid Prison (NBP) on Wednesday, confiscating three airsoft guns, among other contraband.
The raid conducted by around 120 personnel of the Bureau of Corrections (BuCor) was the 28th since November.
Seized during the raid on Building 2—occupied by members of the Commando and Sputnik gangs—were the three airsoft guns used by the inmates “for entertainment purposes,” NBP head Supt. Richard Schwarzkopf said.
It was unclear what the inmates used as ammunition but Schwarzkopf said that since the air guns were also considered firearms, these were prohibited.
Also confiscated were two air-conditioning units, a refrigerator, 9-mm bullets, cell phones and improvised deadly weapons.
“But we did not find any drugs or drug paraphernalia,” Schwarzkopf said.
For the first time since the BuCor started conducting the surprise raids last year, its personnel included the minimum security compound.
The raiding team composed of around 25 BuCor personnel found six cell phone units, two television sets and a refrigerator, Schwarzkopf said.
“That’s all we found, unlike in the maximum [security compound] where there were a lot of contraband,” he added.
