A CHINESE-FILIPINO businessman and his wife were shot dead on their way to the hospital by two gunmen on a motorcycle in Tondo, Manila, Tuesday morning.

The Manila Police District (MPD) identified the fatalities as Kenneth and Maria Luisa Yu, residents of Jose Abad Santos Street also in Tondo.

SPO2 John Charles Duran of the MPD homicide section said the couple were attacked while on their way to Chinese General Hospital around 5 a.m. for Kenneth’s dialysis.

They were on a tricycle on Tayuman Street and waiting for the green light at an intersection when the two assailants approached and one of them shot Kenneth.

He jumped off the tricycle and ran while the vehicle sped off. A security camera footage that captured the incident showed that the gunmen gave chase and kept firing at Kenneth, who apparently tried to get back into the moving tricycle.

The driver, Jerome Buan, was hit in the arm during the chase, while Maria Luisa was hit several times in the body.

Kenneth, who also sustained multiple gunshot wounds in the body, was declared dead on arrival at Tondo General Hospital, while his wife succumbed to her wounds three hours later at Metropolitan Hospital.

The MPD at press time had yet to come up with suspects and was still investigating the motive behind the attack on the Yus, who rented out apartments and operated an Internet shop in Tondo.
