Death toll of pilgrims in Jordan bus crash rises to 16

MAAN, Jordan — Officials say the number of Palestinian pilgrims killed in a bus accident in Jordan has risen to 16.

The bus overturned late Wednesday near the border with Saudi Arabia. Initial reports said 14 passengers were killed and 36 injured.

Hospital doctor Walid Ruwad said Thursday that two more passengers died of their injuries. He says two children were among the dead.

Ruwad says several critically injured people were flown to a hospital in the Jordanian capital of Amman.

The Petra news agency says the driver apparently lost control before the bus overturned.

Injured passenger Azzah Ibrahim says that “some of us were beneath the bus, and some of us were inside the bus, between the chairs.”

The passengers from the West Bank were headed to Saudi Arabia for a pilgrimage.
