Newly hired beautician dies in fire that hits Marikina City salon

MANILA — A beautician who had just started working at a salon in Marikina City died in a fire that engulfed a bazaar on Wednesday.

Rebecca Destajo died in the fire that razed 15 stalls and a house along BG Molina corner E. Rodriguez Streets in Barangay Parang at around 3:10 a.m. Wednesday.

Supt. Edwin Vargas, Marikina’s fire chief, said that the 54-year-old beautician-manicurist was sleeping inside the salon when the fire of still undetermined cause burned down the area.

He added that the victim had just started working at the establishment on Tuesday, and had asked her employer, for unknown reasons, that she stay at the salon for the night.

Vargas said that the fire, which reached the second alarm, quickly spread in the area because the stalls were made of light materials. He added that an estimated P200,000 worth of goods and property were lost in the fire that was put out half an hour after it started.  SFM
