ISULAN, Sultan Kudarat – Police authorities here on Tuesday foiled what could be another bloody incident when a powerful bomb was found and defused.
Supt. Joefel Siason, Isulan town police chief, said two men riding on a motorbike left a trolley bag at a roadside near the town’s rotunda–where a parade to signal the start of the fire prevention month here was to pass–around 6 a.m.
It turned out that the trolley bag contained an improvised explosive device fashioned from 105 millimeter howitzer shells and packed with about four kilograms of nails and metal sheets and had mobile phones as remote detonators.
“It was a very powerful bomb that could kill or maim more than 30 persons within a 15-meter radius had it exploded,” Mayor Diosdado Pallasigue, who was supposed to be leading the parade, said.
Just last month, unidentified armed men also lobbed grenades at a local carnival–killing one boy and leaving over three dozen others injured. CDG
