Roxas shines in 1st presidential debate―INQUIRER.net readers
Administration presidential bet and former Interior Secretary Manuel “Mar” Roxas II seemed to have won the nod of more INQUIRER.net readers during the historic first presidential debate held at Capitol University in Cagayan de Oro City last Sunday.
In the poll posted on the INQUIRER.net website, Roxas got the highest vote on the question “Whose answers impressed you the most in the debates?” with 51.68 percent or 138,172 votes.
Trailing Roxas is tough-talking Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte who got 41.2 percent or 110,157 votes.
The two candidates were way ahead of their other rivals whose votes did not breach the 10,000 mark: Senator Grace Poe was third with 3.23 percent or 8,629 votes, Senator Miriam Defensor-Santiago was fourth with 2.9 percent or 7,760 votes, and Vice President Jejomar Binay was last with only 0.99 percent or 2,363 votes.
The said INQUIRER.net poll, which registered multiple voting, garnered a total of 267,354 votes.
During the debate, Roxas locked horns with Binay after he slammed the latter for enabling two Makati’s―a prosperous Makati in the Central Business District and an impoverished Makati supposedly ruled by the Binays. He also shielded himself from allegations of ineptitude during his stint as the chief of the Interior and Transportation departments.
He also did not mince words when he hit Poe for her thin resume, saying that the presidency is not an on-the-job training.
Malacanang on Monday praised Roxas’ performance during the debate, saying he was the “best prepared” among the five presidential candidates.
“Secretary Roxas showed that he was the best prepared, that he was able to meet the timelines, which is important because it shows you he could think on this feet, marshal his thoughts, boil down complex questions into answers that met the timeline. And I think people saw a new side of him that they may not have known in the past a side of great responsibility and great commitment,” Presidential Communications and Strategic Development Office Undersecretary Manuel L. Quezon III said during a press briefing.
