Susan Roces defends grandson Brian from flak over ‘expensive’ shoes

LA PAZ, Iloilo — Veteran actress Susan Roces admitted on Tuesday being hurt by criticisms that her grandson Brian Poe Llamanzares has been getting over the allegedly pricey shoes that he had bought and posted on Instagram.
“Yes of course,” Roces told Manila-based reporters when asked if she was hurting for Llamanzares, the only son of her adopted daughter, Senator Grace Poe.
“Lahat naman tayo ang pangarap natin e perpekto lahat pero kung nagkakamali kahit na sino pa s’ya hindi naman tama na sabihing: Ah hindi wala s’yang mali.”
(We all want things to be perfect. But if someone commits a mistake, it’s not right to act or say something as if he wasn’t allowed to because he is immaculate.)
“Pero sa isang banda, kung nahuhusgahan naman ng mali e dapat din naman na ipakita sa bata na, o nagkamali ka pero hindi naman ganyan ka-grabe pero nakikita mo kung ano ang epekto so mag iingat ka sa mga pino-post mo,” she added.
(On the other hand, if one is criticized for his mistakes, we should explain to him what he has done wrong and just warn him to be more careful with what he posts next time.)
Lllamanzares had already denied speculations that his purchase amounted to hundreds of thousands pesos, saying he bought it online for P10,000 using his own money. His mother also came to his defense last week.

Roces recognized that the bashing that her grandson has been receiving was again part of politics.
“Alam ko kaparte ‘yan ng pulitika lalo pa at may darating na eleksyon so lahat ng pwedeng ibato…Ngayon, tungkol sa mga issue tungkol sa kanya e kung ano man ang dapat ipangaral sa kanya e ginawa na ng kanyang ina at hindi ko na kailangan pang lampasan kung anoman, kung nasabon s’ya, kung napagsabihan s’ya ng kanyang nanay, nag eksplika na s’ya, tama na y’un,” she said.
(I know it’s part of politics since there is an election, and people would throw whatever issue they can. As for that issue, I think his mother already spoke to him and lectured him, and I do not need to add to that anymore. If his mother scolded him and he had already explained his side, I think that’s enough.)
“Kasi ang mga anak natin, ang mga kabataan sa ating society, huwag nating ipepressure. Bigyan natin sila ng pagkakataon, lahat tayo nagkakamali. ‘Pag merong mali, sinasabi natin, pero binibigyan din natin ng pagkakataon na magpaliwanag at kung minsan ‘yung inaakala nating pagkakamali may dahilan pala, may pinanggagalingan pala.”
(We do not have to pressure our children and the youth of the society. We need to give them a chance, after all, all of us make mistakes. If they have done something wrong, let’s call them out, but let’s also give them a chance to explain, because sometimes, they have a reason why they committed such wrongdoing.)
“Ang importante sa ngayon para sa ating kabataan, pakinggan natin sila. Kung nagkakamali sila, ipagtanggol nila ang sarili nila, mangatwiran sila sa maayos na paraan hindi pabalang-balang…” the actress added.
(What’s important is we listen even to the young. If they committed something wrong, let’s let them defend themselves in the proper manner, but not to the point that they are answering back.) IDL
