99 Bulacan inmates hold noise barrage
BALAGTAS, Bulacan – An hour-long noise barrage which started at 8:45 a.m. was staged on Saturday by 99 inmates of the Balagtas municipal jail over grievances.
The inmates pounded the walls of the detention facility of the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology, alarming jail guards who feared a jail break was imminent.
Supt. Isagani Enriquez, Balagtas police chief, said the police helped the BJMP guards contain the situation, which led to a 9:30 a.m. dialogue between jail warden, Jail Insp. Ramon Centeno and the inmates’ leader. Police from neighboring towns also deployed teams to augment the Balagtas police force securing the jail.
The inmates were ordered to stand down by 10 a.m. at the conclusion of the dialogue. At press time, the BJMP had not divulged the subject of their negotiations with the inmates.
Police said the inmates were agitated over the cancellation of their privileges. CDG
