3 soldiers killed in Kalinga clash
CAMP MELCHOR DELA CRUZ, Gamu, Isabela—Three soldiers were killed in a gun battle with suspected New People’s Army rebels in Balbalan, Kalinga, on Tuesday night, military officials said on Wednesday.
Privates First Class Jocel Abbacan and Jordan Bolar, and Corporal John Rey Dayag were killed in the clash with armed men who attacked a patrol of the 50th Infantry Battalion of the 5th Infantry Division based in Kalinga.
Villagers helped retrieve the soldiers’ remains and brought them to Salegseg village in Balbalan.
In a statement, Maj. Gen. Lysander Suerte, 5th ID commander, said, “We are deeply saddened by this loss. We extend our deepest sympathy to the bereaved families. We will ensure that the families are extended full assistance during this difficult time.”
