President Benigno Aquino III has appointed to the Supreme Court his grade school and college classmate Justice Secretary Alfredo Benjamin Caguioa.
The appointment came four days after the Judicial and Bar Council (JBC) submitted its shortlist of candidates.

Malacañang confirmed the Caguioa’s appointment.
“President Aquino has appointed Justice Secretary Alfredo Benjamin Caguioa as Associate Justice of the Supreme Court vice Associate Justice Martin Villarama Jr. Executive Secretary Paquito Ochoa Jr. has transmitted the appointment letter dated 22 January 2016 to Chief Justice Maria Lourdes Sereno,” Communications Secretary Herminio “Sonny” Coloma Jr. said in a statement to media.
