Manila cops find stun grenade on motorbike left at checkpoint

/ 04:42 AM January 16, 2016

The Manila Police District (MPD) seized a motorcycle that was abandoned by its riders at a checkpoint, and found a “used stun grenade” and two bullets in its compartment.

Chief Insp. Roberto Mangune, head of the MPD Delpan precinct, said two men were seen on the motorcycle—a black Honda XRM (7425ON)—passing through Road 10 around 10:30 a.m. on Thursday.

When officers manning a checkpoint in the area flagged them down, they sped off in the opposite direction but lost their balance. They fell off the bike but continued fleeing on foot.

Upon inspection, a red bag kept in the motorbike’s compartment was found containing the grenade that no longer had a lever, as well as two .357-cal. rounds.

FEATURED STORIES

According to Insp. Arnold Santos, chief of the MPD explosive and ordnance division, stun grenades—nonlethal devices used to temporarily disorient the target’s senses—are issued only to elite or special units of the police and military.

The police also found the vehicle’s official receipt and a money transfer receipt, both in the name of a Freddie Bagual who registered “what seemed to be a fictitious address,” Mangune said.
