SUBIC, Zambales — Classes in two public schools here were suspended on Monday following a bomb threat sent through text messages to the mayor.
Mayor Jefferson Khonghun said he received text messages on Sunday night warning him that a bomb would explode in one of the schools.
Khonghun said the messages from an unknown sender came at 9:30 p.m., telling him that a bomb would explode at the Subic National High School.
He then alerted the police, suspended classes in the two schools Monday and sent a police bomb squad to the schools to search for the alleged bomb. But the squad did not find any bomb until the inspection and search was called off around 9 a.m.
In a text message, Khonghun said classes remained suspended until Monday afternoon. The schools have at least 4,500 students.
“We treat any bomb threat seriously even if it turns out to be a hoax. The priority is the safety of the public,” Khonghun said.
