2 dead, 27 hurt in Ilocos Sur bus collision

SANTIAGO, Ilocos Sur—A fireman and a vendor were killed on Friday when two buses collided along the national highway here, police said.

The fatalities, Senior Fire Officer 1 Jenny Rose Cadaoas, 33, and Reynaldo Pineda, 49, were passengers of a wayward Partas bus that struck a Redval bus on the highway in Barangay Bulbulala here, police said.

Twenty-seven passengers of the two buses, most of them students, were hurt.

After hitting the Redval bus, the Partas bus, which came from Baguio City, crashed into a row of trees. Ten passengers were hurt.

The Redval bus driver, Sonny Galano, 39, said he tried to steer away from the Partas bus but his vehicle was still hit.

Seventeen Redval passengers were injured. Most of them were students of the Saint Joseph Institute in Candon City. They traveled from Vigan City, where they performed in a play. Leoncio Balbin Jr., contributor
