Militant solons urge Aquino to grant amnesty to political prisoners by Christmas
MANILA, Philippines—Militant lawmakers on Monday urged President Benigno Aquino III to grant a general amnesty to 354 political prisoners by Christmas.
In a press conference at the House at 11 a.m., Bayan Muna partylist Representative Teodoro Casino said that Malacañang should move out of its “state of denial” and address the persistent demand for the release of political prisoners.
Casiño said the prisoners include 13 consultants of the National Democratic Front (NDF) and their release should spur the peace talks with the rebels forward.
The NDF is the political wing of the Communist Party of the Philippines.
Gabriela partylist Representative Luz Ilagan said that among the prisoners were 33 women who should be freed immediately to end their unjust incarceration.
Casiño said at least 20 representatives have agreed to sign a bill sponsored by militant lawmakers urging the grant of unconditional amnesty to political prisoners.
