Uber accepts cash payments: ‘Experiment’ for PH market

THE RIDE-SHARING app Uber has started accepting cash payments from riders in the country in a bid to broaden its consumer base.

Uber, which previously accepted payments only via credit card, said cash payments were introduced on Tuesday on a trial basis.

In a statement, it noted that the Philippines was the fifth country in the world and the second in Southeast Asia where it had adopted this system.

“Having the option of paying in cash is really important for people in Metro Manila so this is an exciting experiment for us. We want everyone to enjoy the hassle-free convenience of ordering a safe ride at the push of a button,” said Laurence Cua, Uber Philippines general manager.

“The tests we’ve done in India, Kenya, Saudi Arabia and Vietnam have been hugely successful. This cash experiment in the Philippines will give us more great insights and help us develop our technology to best meet the needs of Filipino riders,” Cua added.

Gradual rollout

Uber said riders in Metro Manila, where it currently operates, would have access to all the current Uber features. “Riders need to simply choose the cash payment option, take a ride and pay their driver directly in cash at the end of the trip.”

The company said the rollout was being done gradually and would be introduced to all riders over the next few weeks.
