Cop, trying to confront attackers, accidentally shoots his leg

A POLICEMAN accidentally shot himself in the foot after he tried to confront two men who tried to hit his multicab with a piece of wood in barangay Jagobiao, Mandaue City.

P02 Bernie Batarilan, who is assigned at the Provincial Public Safety Company based at the Cebu Provincial Police Office in Sudlon, Lahug, Cebu City, suffered a gunshot wound in his leg after his .45 caliber pistol went off when he confronted two men who tried to attack his vehicle.

Police investigation showedthat Batarilan was on his way home from Compostela town in northern Cebu when he saw two bare-chested men walking on road in an uphill portion of barangay Jagobiao.

One of the men was bringing a piece of wood while the other man was holding a bottle.

As he passed near the men, one of them tried to hit his Multicab with a piece of wood.

Batarilan managed to swerve to avoid his vehicle from being hit. He stopped a few meters away from his attackers. He got off the vehicle and pulled out his gun to confront his attackers.

But when he cocked his gun and pointed it down on the ground, it suddenly went off hitting his leg. The gunshot scared the two men, who fled.

Batarilan managed to drive himself to the Eversly Hospital. He was later transferred to a hospital in Cebu City./Correspondent Norman V. Mendoza
