The plot thickens.

The police have found that the gun used in the shooting of Chinese diplomats in Cebu City has a duplicate, which they have traced to the license of a gun owner in Valenzuela City.

Chinese deputy consul Sun Shan and finance officer Hui Li were killed in a shooting incident inside a function room at Lighthouse Restaurant on General Maxilom Avenue allegedly by suspects Li Qing Ling, 60, and his wife, consul Gou Jing, on Wednesday afternoon.

The motive behind the killing has yet to be established.

In a press briefing on Thursday, PNP spokesperson Chief Supt. Wilben Mayor said the serial number of the .45-cal. Colt Defender recovered in the crime scene was similar to that of a gun owned by Theodore Calavera, a resident of Valenzuela City.

Both guns of Calavera and the Chinese suspect had a serial number of 126-238.

Loose firearm

As part of its regular Oplan Katok campaign against loose firearms, the Valenzuela City Police went to Calavera’s house to check the pistol.

However, upon checking with the PNP’s Firearms and Explosives Office, the officers found that Calavera’s gun license was already expired.

“Accordingly, the gun owner (Calavera) had sold his gun to a certain Mr. Mago. The Valenzuela police were able to recover the gun. So there’s a gun here in Manila at the same time, it has a twin in Cebu,” Mayor said.

Calavera’s firearm is now with the FEO while the .45-cal. in Cebu is currently with the Cebu Provincial Police’s investigation division.

“It would appear that there were two guns (with the same serial number). But again FEO records show that the serial number and the model of the firearm is owned by Calavera,” Mayor said.

Calavera’s liability

“FEO records show that the serial number and the model of the firearm is owned by Calavera … The question now here is, which one is the original?” he added.

For selling the gun with an expired license, Calavera could be held liable for illegal disposition of firearm, the police spokesperson said.

“Before selling a firearm, there should be an approval from the FEO,” Mayor said. Julliane Love de Jesus/RC
