He said the victims were travelling from Kuala Terengganu to Kuantan before their car skidded and crashed into the lorry laden with rice.
“Initial investigations showed the road condition was slippery due to rain and the driver lost control of the vehicle after hitting a puddle of water. The vehicle spun several times before skidding and crashing into the parked trailer in the emergency lane,” he told reporters.
It is understood that when the incident occurred, the 35-year-old trailer driver from Kelantan was asleep in the vehicle and was not even aware of the accident until notified by other road users.
Supt. Mohd Said said 25 firemen from the Cheneh and Gebeng fire stations took about 30 minutes to extricate the bodies out of the wreckage.
The bodies were sent to the Kemaman Hospital for post-mortem.
Supt. Mohd Said said the driver of the trailer had been detained to assist investigation, adding that the emergency lane at highways was not a rest place.
