Leni: Accepting LP offer hardest decision for me and my family

/ 02:57 PM October 05, 2015

Leni Robredo said she made a tough decision and filed her candidacy as a district representative to stop a political dynasty in Camarines Sur on Oct. 5, 2012.

On the same exact date three years later, Leni finally “jumped in” and accepted the offer to run as the vice president of Mar Roxas, the political ally and then successor as Interior Secretary of her late husband Jesse Robredo.

In her acceptance speech on Monday, Leni said going through the decision-making process on whether she would take on the challenge of the Liberal Party was the hardest for her and her family since Robredo’s death in 2012.

Roxas officially announced before thousands of LP officials, members and supporters that Leni would be his running mate in the general elections in a gathering at Club Filipino in Greenhills, San Juan City.

Why me?

It came to a point that Leni had to ask herself, “Why me? Of all the possible options, why does it have to be me?”

Eventually, she said she found the answer. Leni said she based her decision through her husband’s usual response whenever he was being called to serve.

When Jesse died, Leni said it was clear to her and her daughters knew that from then on, Jesse would ask them to make sacrifices.

Mar’s partner

When Jesse was still alive, Leni recalled that her husband had always been a partner of Roxas, facing together the challenges in pursuing the “Daang Matuwid.”

Toward the end of her speech, Leni thanked her daughters Aika, Tricia and Jill, who previously did not approve Leni’s running for higher office, for giving her their blessing.

Like what Jesse believes in, Leni said that everything happens for a reason and that the good will always triumph.
