Cebu school condemns college student’s rape-slay

CEBU CITY, Philippines–Students of University of San Carlos are encouraged to wear black on Thursday and Friday to express sympathy to the family of a 17-year-old accounting student who was found dead inside her house in Lapu-Lapu City on Tuesday.

“The Carolinian community is shocked and saddened by the news of what happened to our student–Karen Kaye Montebon. We condemn this heartless act of killing and we hope that justice be served,” said Niel Steve Kintanar, head of the USC Office of Student Affairs, in a letter addressed to all college students of USC on Wednesday.

“We expressed our sincerest sympathy and condolence to the family, relatives and friends and we encourage our students to wear black shirts this Thursday (Sept, 17) and Friday (Sept. 18),” he added.

“We are praying that God grants peace to the soul of our dearly departed,” he said.

The one-page letter was noted by Fr. Emmanuel Sarabia SVD, USC director of Student Services.

Students in USC were shocked when news came out that Montebon, first year accounting student of one of the biggest universities in Cebu, was found dead by her father, James, inside he room at their home in Corinthians Subdivision in Barangay Suba-Maslog in Lapu-Lapu City at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday.

Montebon had bruises and a cord of a hair straightener was tied around her neck.

Physicians at the Mactan Doctors’ Hospital confirmed that she died of strangulation and that there were lacerations in her sex organ. Connie Fernandez, Inquirer Visayas/TVJ
