Today, Sept. 8, is the 100th birth anniversary of National Artist for Literature Nestor Vicente Madali Gonzalez, more popularly known as N.V.M Gonzalez. Born in 1915, Gonzalez was a teacher, author, journalist and essayist. His first published essay appeared in the Philippine Graphic in 1934. Through his writings, he received many awards, including several Don Carlos Palanca Memorial Awards for Literature, the Jose Rizal Pro Patria Award, City of Manila Medal of Honor, and the Gawad CCP para sa Sining. Gonzalez was conferred the title of National Artist in 1997 and died on Nov. 28, 1999.–Marielle Medina, Inquirer Research
