Pinoy team bests 11 nations to top math contest

THE PHILIPPINE team topped the recently-concluded inaugural Singapore International Mathematics Olympiad Challenge, beating out 11 other countries.

One of the Filipino delegates, Filbert Ephraim Wu, a Grade 4 student of MGC New Life Christian Academy in Taguig City, even aced the contest by garnering a perfect score.

The good news was relayed to the Inquirer on Friday by Dr. Archieval Rodriguez, president of the Mathematics Development Academy of the Philippines, who headed the team.

Aside from the gold medal won by Wu, the Philippine delegation also took home 13 other golds, 20 silvers and 29 bronzes as well as 11 special awards.

The other participating countries were China, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Indonesia, Vietnam, Burma (Myanmar), Cambodia, Mongolia, Bulgaria, Uzbekistan and Singapore which hosted the contest.

The Philippines’ other gold medals came courtesy of the following students: Matthew Angelo Isidro, Danela Kayla Maceda, Westin Darren Maceda and Chiara Bernadette Gatue, all from St. Jude Catholic School; Filbert Joseph Ubanos, Elizabeth Seton School; Seth Marchen Trompeta, Colegio San Agustin-Biñan.

Marie Emmanuelle Martinez, University of the Philippines Integrated School; Jose Ignacio Locsin, Philippine Science High School; Matteo Tristan Sy and Neo Angelo Gatlabayan, both from British School Manila; Jan Joshua Cruz, Pasig Catholic College; and Alfonso Miguel Abella and Adam Christopher Chan, both from Grace Christian College.

The silver medalists were Christopher Banzon, Makati Science High School; Miguel Cayetano, Tuguegarao West Central Elementary School; Sophia Monique Chan, Zamboanga Chong Hua High School; Alessandro Gabriel Eduarte, St. Simon Montessori School; Shawn Pierce Go and Geosef Viktor Uy, both from Chiang Kai Shek College; John Aries Ceazar Hingan, San Beda College Alabang; Jarius Carle Isagurre, St. Paul College of Ilocos Sur; Matthew Shawn Tansiongkun, Xavier School; and Min Chan Jeong and Sean Marcus So, both from Grace Christian College, among others.
