Strikes prompt Qantas to cancel more flights

/ 05:16 PM October 06, 2011

SYDNEY—Qantas Airways ground workers have canceled a planned strike that threw the travel plans of thousands into chaos — but Qantas says dozens of flights will still be canceled or delayed.

The flagship Australian carrier says it’s too late to reinstate the 17 flights that were canceled or reschedule the 29 flights that will be delayed on Friday because of the Transport Workers Union’s planned strike.

The Australian Licenced Aircraft Engineers Association still plans to continue with its strike on Friday.

The unions have held a series of strikes in recent weeks as they fight the airline over pay and work conditions.

Qantas says more than 35,000 passengers have been affected by the unions’ industrial action over the past month.
