US tabby, 26, claims title of world’s oldest cat

Who needs nine lives? Corduroy the cat seems to be getting the most out of this one, having recently turned a record-setting 26 years old—or approximately 120 “cat years.”

Newly crowned by the Guinness Book of World Records as the world’s oldest living cat, Corduroy was feted on Friday by his owner, Ashley Reed Okura.

“We are thrilled! I bought Corduroy a mouse to celebrate,” she wrote. “It is wonderful to share him with the world.”

Corduroy was born on August 1, 1989. He took over the longevity title from Tiffany Two, who lived for 27 years, two months and 20 days before passing away this spring.

Corduroy has a way to go, however, before he dethrones the all-time record holder of world’s oldest cat.

That title-holding tabby, Creme Puff, born in 1967, lived an astounding 38 years and three days, more than twice the 14-year life span of the average cat.
