Woman, son hurt in grenade, gunfire attack in Iloilo

ILOILO CITY, Philippines—A mother and her teenaged son were injured on Tuesday night when unidentified men lobbed a grenade and fired at their house in Barangay Golgota in Janiuay town, Iloilo.

Shirley Tidula, 54, had graze wounds on the head while her son AJ, 14, was shot in the leg and abdomen, said Shirley’s husband Leonardo, 54.

Leonardo said in an interview over RMN-Iloilo they were about to sleep past 9 p.m. when they heard a grenade explosion, which was followed by bursts of gunfire from a 12-gauge shot gun and a short arm.

“We immediately dropped (on the floor) after hearing the explosion and several bursts of gunfire,” Leonardo said in vernacular.

Shirley was confined at the Federico Roman Tirador Memorial District Hospital in Janiuay.  AJ is scheduled for operation at the Western Visayas Medical Center in Mandurriao, Iloilo City.

Leonardo said they were attacked a day after he joined the anti-administration rally initiated by the Bagong Alyansang Makabayan in Iloilo on Monday during President Benigno Aquino III’s State of the Nation Address.

He declined to say if he belonged to Bayan. TVJ
