No tsunami threat in PH after 6.5 quake in Solomon Islands

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) on Friday allayed fears of a tsunami following a 6.5-magnitude earthquake recorded off Solomon Islands.

“No destructive Pacific-wide threat exists based on the historical and tsunami data,” Phivolcs said in its advisory released at 12:26 p.m. on Friday.

It noted the “strong distant earthquake” that occurred 12:13 p.m. in Solomon Islands, with an initial magnitude of 7.0. Later reports said the earthquake magnitude was 6.5.

“This is for information purposes only and there is no tsunami threat to the Philippines from this earthquake,” Phivolcs reiterated in its post.
