Should your sons join the boy scouts?

/ 05:34 AM June 23, 2015

Binay reelected BSP president unopposed—headline.

The “Binay” referred to in the headline is none other than Vice President Jojo Binay; “BSP” refers to the Boy Scouts of the Philippines.

The BSP has gone to the dogs.

I have advised all my grown-up children not to let my grandsons become boy scouts.

FEATURED STORIES

I urge other parents not to let their sons join the BSP.

Let me remind the fathers, who like me joined the movement in their youth, that one of the target virtues of a boy scout is to be trustworthy and morally straight.

How can the BSP teach our sons and grandsons these virtues when its chief scout is reportedly untrustworthy and morally crooked?

The Supreme Court has suspended lawyer Dennis Acorda for three years for dishonesty in handling an inheritance case.

If the high tribunal considers  dishonesty a big offense among lawyers, meriting a three-year suspension, then it should look into the possibility of dismissing from the bench—or even disbarring—a Makati judge for sheer abuse of power.

The judge has allegedly been issuing temporary restraining orders in commercial cases for his own financial gain.

For this reason, he has gained notoriety even among his fellow judges and prosecutors in Makati.

If I may make a suggestion,  the Supreme Court should order the National Bureau of Investigation to investigate the allegations against this notorious Makati judge.

Many years ago, upon the suggestion of this columnist, the high court disbarred Tarlac Judge Jose Bartolome for pocketing  bail money posted by respondents.

This was after it ordered the NBI to look into my claim that Bartolome was embezzling bail money entrusted to his court.  The NBI later confirmed my allegation.

Based on the results of the latest Pulse Asia and SWS surveys, Sen. Grace Poe would win the presidency if the elections were to be held tomorrow.

But would she run the country well?

Buhay party-list Rep. Lito Atienza, former Manila mayor and Cabinet member, says that Poe is too inexperienced to lead the country.

“I am afraid of what will happen if Grace Poe becomes President because she has no experience. If she becomes President, whom do we run to? Another six years of what?”

Atienza’s words are worth pondering over.

But if Atienza is pushing for Binay, huwag na lang (forget it).

Yes, Binay has lots of experience in governance—but the wrong way.

It’s preferable to have an inexperienced and naïve but honest and sincere leader rather than one who is corrupt to the core.

There’s a better alternative to Grace Poe for the presidency.

If she’s patriotic enough, Poe should give way to Davao City Mayor Rody Duterte who is an incorruptible and no-nonsense leader.

Duterte could save this country from ruin due to drugs and a high crime rate the same way he transformed Davao City which used to be the country’s murder capital before he became its mayor.

Sen. Teofisto “TG” Guingona has asked Justice Secretary Leila de Lima to place whistle-blower Rhodora Alvarez under the government’s Witness Protection Program.

Alvarez earlier exposed the alleged corruption in the P1.26-billion purchase by the Department of National Defense of 21 refurbished helicopters.

Her life is in danger.
