MANILA, Philippines — Interior and Local Government Secretary Jonvic Remulla requested the National Police Commission (Napolcom) to extend the active service of Calabarzon police chief Brig. Gen. Hansel Marantan for one year.
“This request is being made in the interest of the service to ensure continuity in the execution of critical and ongoing high-impact operations currently being spearheaded by General Marantan,” Remulla said in a letter to Napolcom.

The letter did not indicate when the request was made.
Marantan was set to reach the mandatory Philippine National Police (PNP) retirement age of 56 this coming July 10.
However, the Republic Act No. 6975 or the DILG Act states: “In case of any officer with the rank of [police brigadier general, police major general or police lieutenant general], [Napolcom] may allow his retention in the service for an unextendable period of one year.”
“There is great merit in his service. We still need his specialized skill set for one more year,” Remulla explained in a text message sent to reporters.
In a press briefing in Camp Crame later on Friday, PNP public information chief Col. Allen Rae Co explained that whether the request could be granted was still up to President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. since he appoints police officers with the rank of police brigadier general and higher.
For his part, in a statement, Marantan thanked Remulla for the request.
“I am deeply honored and grateful for the trust and confidence reflected in the recommendation for a one-year extension of my service,” Marantan said.
“However, I fully recognize that this remains subject to the approval of the proper authorities and I respect whatever decision they ultimately make,” he added. /das /mr
