CATARMAN, Philippines—A state university here announced the suspension of its classes on Monday after receiving an email that the school would be bombed.
The order to suspend classes was issued by Mar De Asis, president of the University of Eastern Philippines, after holding a meeting with the Administrative Council on Sunday.
An email received through the university’s website claimed that the administration building would be bombed.
The message alarmed the school officials who immediately sought the assistance of the local police, the military and the National Bureau of Investigations (NBI) which sent their teams to secure the campus.
While no bomb was found, the school officials decided to suspend classes on Monday because the threat continued to “affect the security of the university constituents.”
But “the offices in the University Management Center (administration building) will continue to operate its regular basic functions,” according to a press release issued by the school.
UEP, which celebrated its 97th anniversary on June 20, was the first state university in Eastern Visayas.
Sitting on a sprawling 516-hectare campus, the university has at least 12,000 students.
